AIRC Interactions with Policy Agencies 2009

 

Federal Government

  • 3 September 2009. Professor Jonathan West held three workshops for staff from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in Canberra.

  • 26 June 2009.The final draft of the Innovation Metrics for Australia report was submitted to the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. Anthony Arundel and Kieran O'Brien met with staff from DIISR to finalise the project report on 3 July, and the final version was submitted on 10 July.

  • 19 June 2009. Anthony Arundel and Kieran O'Brien presented key results of the DIISR Innovation Metrics for Australia study to the project Steering Committee in Canberra.

  • June 2009.  Anthony Arundel and Kieran O'Brien are undertaking an innovation metrics project for the Department of Industry, Innovation Science and Research.  An interim report was submitted on 27 May 2009.  Findings will be presented in Caberra in mid-June, and the project will be completed by the end of June.

  • 1 May 2009.   Professor Jonathan West spoke at the Community Jobs Summit in Melbourne, hosted by the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard.  The aim of the summit was to explore strategies for maximising the economic and social impact of the Australian Government's Community Jobs Fund.  The Auspicing partners at the Summit were the Australian Government, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, the Salvation Army, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, and Mission Australia. 

  • April 2009. Professor Ian Marsh met with Linkage Grant partners - the Department of Prime Minister, the University of Canberra, the Public Service Commission, the Department of Health, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Indigenous Affairs - on the Joined-up-Government project, which will run for three years.

  • 2 March 2009. AIRC Honorary Fellow Anthony Arundel was invited to speak at the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in Canberra.  He presented "Neglected innovators: What do innovators that do not perform R&D do? Results of a survey of 4.395 European Firms". 

Government of Tasmania

  • December 2009. Professor David Adams has been appointed as the Chair of the Tasmanian Food Security Council (TFSC).  The TFSC will oversee the development of a Food Security Strategy for Tasmania, oversee the Food Security Fund, and identify the means by which all Tasmanians can have access to food that is sufficient, reliable, nutritious, safe, acceptable and sustainable. 

  • November 2009. Skills Tasmania confirmed acceptance of an AIRC project proposal outlining a study of firms in the North-West region of Tasmania (developed following a series of discussions with Skills Tasmania thorughout 2009, and submitted on 25 September 2009). The project is expected to begin in early 2010, and be completed within six months.

  • 18 September 2009. The report Structure, business demographics and innovation in the Burnie region was submitted to the Burnie City Council. The project report was well received, and the Council is planning a public launch of the report.

  • 31 August 2009.  Professor Jonathan West presented the completed report An Innovation Strategy for Tasmania, A New Vision for Economic Development - Conceptual Overview and Options Outline, to Premier David Bartlett.

  • 25 August 2009. Paul Muller, together with Craig Martin (Director, Sport and Recreation Tasmania), briefed the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Michelle O'Byrne, on the interim findings of the EconomicValue of Sport and Physical Recreation to Tasmania project. TheMinister will publicly launch the report before the end of 2009.

  • 24 August 2009. Professor Jonathan West and Kieran O'Brien met with Mark Sayer of Skills Tasmania to discuss a collaborative project between the AIRC and SkillsTasmania.  A project proposal was presented to Skills Tasmania on 25 September 2009.

  • 14 August 2009.  Associate Professor Jack English was a judge for the C-Star Awards.

  • July 2009. Professor Jonathan West and Mark Kelleher, the head of the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts, on behalf of the Tasmanian Development Authority, have conducted discussions around the state relating to the Tasmanian Innovation Strategy.  They were in the South on 16 July 2009, and in the North (Launceston and Burnie) on 23 and 24 July 2009.

  • 30 June 2009. As part of ongoing stakeholder engagement, Professor Jonathan West and Rod Stolorz of the AIRC met with representatives from the Department of Treasury to discuss the context of the Tasmanian Innovation Strategy, the role of the conceptual paper prepared by Professor West, and the role of the AIRC in advising the Tasmanian Government. 

  • April 2009. Professor Ian Marsh has attended wrap-up meetings on the Citizens Parliament project.

  • December 2008. Professor Jonathan West completed a draft paper titled An Innovation Strategy for Tasmania: Conceptual Background and Initiatives Outline - Food as Model Sector.  The Paper was submitted to the Tasmanian Government  for initial consideration.  

  • 19 February 2009. Professor Jonathan West spoke to the Department of Economic Development and Tourism Strategy Day, on the Tasmanian Innovation Strategy. Departmental Senior Management and stakeholders attended.

  • 3 March 2009. Premier David Bartlett made extensive reference to the Tasmanian Innovation Strategy in his State of the State address. The Premier noted that "We have commissioned the Australian Innovation Research Centre to help us identify those areas [i.e. new strategies] through the creation of the Tasmanian Innovation Strategy. This work, being led by Professor Jonathon West, has identified some potential areas in which Tasmania could make use of its natural advantages to lead the world." The Premier noted several elements of the Tasmanian Innovation Strategy, including the development of a farm management course (in conjunction with the University of Tasmania), the creation of a leading hospitality training institute ("The Tasmanian Culinary School of Excellence"), the Wireless Waterfront Project, the appointment of a Social Inclusion Commissioner (the AIRC's David Adams), and the Tasmanian Festival of Ideas.

Government of New South Wales

  • 26 February 2009. Professor Jonathan West spoke at the New South Wales Jobs Summit. The summit was launched by the NSW Premier Nathan Rees, to identify ways that jobs in key sectors could be protected during the global economic downturn. Business leaders, and representatives from peak bodies, major employers and unions attended.
