
Associate Professor Jack English joined the Australian Innovation
Research Centre in 2006 as Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship. His role is
to encourage the development of an enterprising culture in Tasmania.
Previous appointments have been at the University of Canberra
(2003–06), the University of Tasmania (1989–2003), Charles Sturt
University (1982–89), Southern Cross University (1975–82) and the
University of New England (1973–74). He has developed and introduced a
variety of programs focused on entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation
and commercialisation for students from disciplines as diverse as
science, arts, education, information technology, engineering and
business.
Jack is the author of 23 books including How to Organise and Operate a Small Business in Australia, which has been in print for more than twenty-five years in ten editions; The New Australian Stockmarket Investor;and Going Solo. He is also the co-author of Personal Financial Management and The Small Business Book (New Zealand). He serves on the Tasmanian Innovations Advisory Board, the Research Investment Advisory Committee of the Tas ICT Centre and is Adjunct Professor in Entrepreneurship at the University of Canberra.
Jack is particularly interested in innovation evaluation systems and business opportunity recognition. He has developed the Innovation Development Early Assessment System, or IDEAS, which is a method for evaluating the commercial potential of new ideas very early in the innovation process. IDEAS offers a low-cost, comprehensive and systematic analysis that provides a uniform, easily communicated and understood basis for assessment. As part of the Australian Innovation Research Centre outreach program, Jack is introducing IDEAS throughout Australia.
