
Ian's research covers innovation in and through
governmental structures. Currently, he has three major projects. One focuses on the
potential form of regime change in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. This is
in conjunction with Professor Raymond Miller at the University of Auckland. Another
is a comparative study of innovation strategies in Ireland, Australia, Denmark
and Sweden. This latter project is in conjunction with Professor Len Seabrook of
the Copenhagen Business School. Other research activities include a review of
joined-up government in Australia, an assessment of the role of parliamentary
committees in facilitating interest engagement, and an evaluation of Australia's
disability employment system. Prior to joining the AIRC, Ian was a Professor in
the Graduate School of Government, University of Sydney (2004-2007), and prior to that a Senior Fellow in the Politics Programme at the Research School of Social
Sciences, Australian National University (1999-2004).
Ian received his BA from the University of
Newcastle, and later studied at Harvard (MPA, AM, PhD). He has visiting appointments at the European
University Institute, Florence and Keio University, Tokyo. He is a Director of
the NewDemocracy Foundation, and a Research Fellow with the Committee for the
Economic Development of Australia.
