Presentations 2008

 

  • Kieran O'Brien delivered a presentation "The Tasmanian Innovation Census: Results and Research" to the Enterprise Development Division in the Regional North West Office of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism on 2 December 2008.

  • Professor Jonathan West addressed the Tasmanian Economic Forum in Hobart on 1 December 2008. Professor West noted that Tasmania could not rely on consumer and real estate booms to drive its economy indefinitely, and particulary in a world wide economic crisis. An alternative possible future for Tasmania involves a major expansion of the beef, dairy, horticulture, wine and acquaculture sectors, which could add $5 billion to the value of agriculture within a decade, or $10,000 to the average productivity of every Tasmanian. Initial reaction to this strategic direction was very positive, with an editorial in The Mercury on 3 December 2008 noting that "it is an exciting vision but it must be sustainable and grounded in science."

  • Paul Muller presented a paper (co-authored with Professor David Adams) titled "Sport: What is it Good For?" at the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand Conference in Fremantle, WA, on 27-29 November. 

  • Kieran O'Brien delivered a presentation "The Tasmanian Innovation Census: Results and Research" to the Small Business Policy and Programs area at the Department of Economic Development and Tourism as part of their Strategic Planning and Review Day on 21 November 2008.

  • Paul Muller presented two papers at the Social Impact of Sport Governance and Management Conference at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, on 20-22 November 2008. His papers were titled "An Eclectic Theory of Sport" and "Social Captial, Sport and the Substitution of Source".

  • Professor David Adams, along with ANZ Chief Economist Saul Eslake, participated in the UTAS Conversation Series with Professor Henry Reynolds (Director of the University's Community Place & Heritage Research Unit), on 20 November 2008. The topic under discussion was "Provincial Identity - Prison or Promise: Northern Tasmania in a global world".

  • Professor Keith Smith will lecture on International Policy Coordination and Energy Carrier Technologies at the Ecole des Sciences Politique in Paris on 17 November 2008, and 4 December 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith and Kieran O'Brien presented results from the Tasmanian Innovation Census to the Department Secretary and staff members of the Department of Primary Industries and Water at the AIRC offices on 4 November 2008.

  • Justin Thurley gave a presentation titled "Information Handling Routines as a Driver for Firm ICT Innovation" at the AIRC on October 27 2008, and at the School of Management Research Seminar Series on October 31 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith and Kieran O'Brien presented results from the Tasmanian Innovation Census to a team from the Department of Economic Development on October 30 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith and Kieran O'Brien presented results from the Tasmanian Innovation Census to a team from the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources at the AIRC offices on 21 October 2008.

  • Professor David Adams made a presentation to the TasmanianYoung Leaders Forum on "Community Assets in Tasmania" on October 17 2008.                                    

  • Professor David Adams was opening speaker at the Young Professionals Conference in Burnie on October 17 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith and Kieran O'Brien presented results from the Tasmanian Innovation Census to the "Our Economy" Taskforce at the Department of Economic Development on October15 2008.

  • Professor David Adams presented the Plenary address at the OECD Partnerships and Social Inclusion Conference in Melbourne on October 15 2008.                       

  • Kieran O'Brien delivered a presentation "The Tasmanian Innovation Census: Initial results and firm collaboration with UTAS" to the Research College Board at the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute on Friday October 3 2008.

  • Kieran O'Brien delivered a presentation "The Tasmanian Innovation Census: Initial results and future research" to the Innovation and Technology National Statistics Centre at ABS Central Office in Canberra on Wednesday September 24th 2008.

  • Kieran O'Brien represented the AIRC at the ABS Innovation Technical Reference Group Meeting in Canberra on September 24th 2008.

  • Kieran O'Brien gave a presentation to the AIRC Advisory Council on 8th September, covering the key Census results, some second level results and future strategic issues for the Census based research program and the AIRC.

  • Professor Ian Marsh also presented at the AIRC Advisory Council Meeting on 8th September, "Dilemmas of Strategic Public Policy Development".

  • Professor Jonathan West was guest speaker at the Australasian Research  Management Society 10th Annual Conference at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Friday 5th September 2008.

  • Paul Muller presented a paper "Understanding the Quality of Sport" at the sharing Excellence in Research Conference on 4th-5th September at the University of Tasmania.

  • Keith Smith, Kieran O'Brien and Jack English gave a presentation to all the staff at the Tasmanian Office of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR): AusIndustry in late August, which covered key aspects and results of the Census project.

  • Kieran O'Brien provided some detail/analyses of Collaboration activities of innovating firms in Tasmania with UTAS, which was used in Jonathan West's presentation to the Universities Australia Workshop in Alice Springs on 31 August 2008.

  • On Friday 29th August Dr Tony McCall was guest speaker at the School of Government Seminar at the University of Tasmania - Sandy Bay Campus.  His talk was titled "Regional Development Platform Methods and Enterprise Innovation: Aged Care Business Enterprises in Tasmania'.

  • Professor Ian Marsh was guest speaker at the AIRC Seminar Series on Friday 29th August.  He presented "Innovation and Public Policy: Notes on Gary Banks Colin Clark Memorial Lecture".

  • Julia Crozier gave a proposal presentation at the School of Management Sandy Bay Campus on Friday 29th August.  Her presentation was titled ‘Innovation in Tourism - the Role of Meaning'.

  • Professor Ian Marsh was guest speaker at the School of Government Seminar on Friday 15 August 2008, University of Tasmania - Sandy Bay Campus.  His presentation was titled 'Dilemmas of Policy Innovation in the Public Sector: A case study of the National Innovation Summit'.

  • Justin Thurley presented at the 2008 National University Finance & Procurement Conference for the Australian Innovation Research Centre.  The topic was "Business Intelligence for Better Decision-Making: a discussion of strategic use of systems, Business Intelligence projects and in-house tools in use in Universities".

  •  Keith Smith spoke, with Senator. Kim Carr, Dr Terry Cutler and Mr Evan Thornley at the launch of Peter Cebon's book Measured Success, at the Melbourne Business School, 16 July 2008.

  • On July 10 2008 Doug Fraser delivered a paper "What's happening to skill in Australian jobs?" at the Vocational Education and Training Conference, organised by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research at UTAS newnham campus.  Over 40 people attended this session, and it was well received by the participants.  The paper will be posted on the www.ncver.edu.au website early next month.

  • Professor Keith Smith lectured at the EU PhD Summer School in Innovation Studies in Pecs, Hungary, on "Innovation Policy and the Energy Transition" and "Innovation Infrastructures", on June 25th-26th 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith presented a paper on ‘R&D Specialisations and the design of innovation policy’ at the EU Conference on ‘R&D Specialisation in Europe’ in Barcelona 30th June 2008.   

  • Professor Ian Marsh spoke at The History and Future of Social Innovation conference at the University of Adelaide on ‘Innovation and Public Policy’ on 19th-21st June 2008.

  • Professor Ian Marsh presented two papers at the University of Adelaide’s Innovation Executive Program in June 2008: ‘a case study of the development of the Australian wine industry’ and ‘Building State and Inter-state Innovation Strategies: Ireland, Hong Kong and the EU’.

  • Eric Iversen with Rudi Bekkers (Eindhoven University) and Knut Blind (Technical University Berlin) gave a poster presentation "New coordination for IPRs and Standards: Looking beyond Ex Ante Disclosure Rules" at DRUID fundamentals "Open and Proprietary Innovation Regimes.  Opportunities and Limitations of the Open Source Model of Innovation and the Role of Intellectual Property Rights" on 17th June 2008.

  • Nasser Refaei presented a paper on ‘Implications of innovative economic activities for logistics requirements in Tasmania: a logistics-oriented and industry-based analysis approach’ at the ANZAM Operations Supply Chain & Services Management Symposium on the 8th-11th June on the Gold Coast.

  • Professor Jonathan West delivered a presentation titled 'Trends and Prospects for Innovation in Tasmania', as part of the Northern Tasmanian Development leaders luncheon series in Launceston on 29th May 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith gave the keynote speech on ‘Innovation in Tasmania’ to the Skills Tasmania Innovation Conference at Wrest Point, Hobart on 26th May 2008.

  • Eric Iversen gave a presentation"Small Nordic Enterprise Developing IPR" at the Norwegian Research council on 21st May 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith presented a paper on ‘Climate change and technological transitions’ to an International Workshop on Technological Discontinuities and Transitions, at the Eindhoven Centre for Innovation Studies, Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands on 14th-16th May 2008.

  •  Eric Iversen gave a presentation "Studying a Market for IP" at the Birkbeck College, University of London on 1 May 2008.

  • Dr Susan Nelle made a presentation on food industry innovation and competitiveness at the FICT Food Industry Strategy Forum on 15thApril 2008.  Dr Nelle also represented the Council at four regional workshops on  29th-30th April 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith and Kieran O’Brien presented a seminar on the results of the Tasmanian Innovation Census to the Director and staff of Skills Tasmania on 8th April 2008.

  • Professor Keith Smith presented a seminar in the Business School at the University of Queensland on 4th April 2008, on ‘innovation trajectories in resource-based industries’.

  •  Eric Iverson presented 'Name harmonization in the Nordic countries' at the OECD workshop on the Harmonization of Applicants' names in Patent data on 14th March in Paris.

  • Professor Keith Smith presented a paper and led a seminar on Innovation Policy in Resource Based Economies at the OECD High Level Group Meeting in Oslo on 3rd March 2008.

  •  Professor Jonathan West and Doctor Susan Nelle were guest speakers at the i-cubed network event on 28th February 2008.  The theme of the event was ‘Agri-food as a global growth business’.

Professor Jonathan West presented on "The Innovation Horizon'"to the Tasmanian Innovations Advisory Board on 8th February 2008.

  • Professor Jack English presented on "Tasmanian Innovation Program – Future Policy Perspectives" on 8th February 2008.
